This is more of a caution than news.
Beware that upgrading your 3G iPhone to the latest firmware v2.2 would effectively also upgrade the baseband (the phone part of your iphone software). And this upgrade basically would make sure that the *turbo* sim in your 3G iPhone does not work with the service providers in Pakistan (namely mobilink, telenor, ufone, warid, zong etc), or abroad, anymore. Note that the first generation iPhones (commonly known as 2G iPhones) do not get the baseband upgrade .. although they should still upgrade at their own risk. Even if you downgrade your iPhone to the older v2.1, your baseband won’t be downgraded & hence the phone part of your 3G iPhone still won’t work.
Another disadvantage of upgrading is that you won’t be able to software unlock your 3G iPhone anytime soon.
You people are right that upgrading iphone 3g to 2.2 firmware is risky business but it is possible to unlock 2.2 and also modified firmwares are available with out upgrade baseband. For more info visit

This is a caution for normal users, who do upgrade without realizing the consequences. There are certain new turbo sims that do work with the newer upgraded v2.2. The hacking community may come up with a solution for all this soon. But for now, the users with existing turbo sims might find themselves with a non working phone, if they upgrade.
